- 1. Los dos factores de la mercancía: valor de uso y valor

Un objeto puede ser valor de uso sin ser valor. Así acontece cuando la utilidad de este objeto encierra para el hombre no se debe al trabajo. Es el caso del aire, de la tierra virgen, de las praderas naturales, de los bosques silvestres, etc. Y puede, asimismo, un objeto ser útil y producto del trabajo humano sin ser mercancía. Los productos del trabajo, destinados a satisfacer las necesidades personales de quien los crea son, indudablemente, valores de uso, pero no mercancías. Para producir mercancía, no basta producir valores de uso, sino que es menester producir valores de uso par otros, valores de uso sociales. (Y no sólo para otros, pura y simplemente. El labriego de la Edad Media producía el trigo del tributo para el señor feudal y el trigo del diezmo para el cura; y, sin embargo, a pesar de producirlo para otros, ni el trigo del tributo ni el trigo del diezmo eran mercancías. Para ser mercancía, el producto ha de pasar a manos de otro, del que lo consume, por medio de un acto de cambio* Finalmente, ningún objeto puede ser valor sin ser a la vez objeto útil, Si es inútil, lo será también el trabajo que éste encierra; no contará como trabajo que éste encierra; no contará como trabajo ni representará, por tanto valor.
